Wintering
There is something deeply comforting about this time of year.
The Christmas decorations are nearly packed away, (I wait until epiphany) the house feels quieter and the days stretch out in that gentle, wintery way that invites us to slow right down. The world outside might be rushing forward but winter whispers something different, pause, rest, be still for a while.
I’ve always loved this season for that reason. Winter isn’t a time for pushing or striving, it’s a time for wintering. For cosy days by the fire, reading books that have been waiting patiently on the shelf, pottering about the house without a long list or a deadline and allowing the rhythm of the days to soften.
There’s a certain kind of peace that comes from not needing to be anywhere in a hurry.
Slow and cosy days
These days, my favourite moments are often the quietest ones. A fire lit mid-afternoon, a cup of tea going cold beside me, the simple pleasure of turning pages while the light fades outside. I find myself pottering tidying a drawer here, rearranging a shelf there not with urgency but with care.
Pottering is underrated. It’s not about productivity or ticking things off it’s about being present in your own home, noticing what you already have and tending to it gently.
Winter gives us permission to do less and enjoy it more. Before long we will be back to school and back on that treadmill of life! So for now I’m savouring every moment.
Planning the year ahead
January always brings with it a sense of possibility but I’ve learned over the years that I don’t respond well to loud declarations or strict New Year’s resolutions. They often feel heavy before the year has even begun.
Instead, I like to use this quieter time to dream.
I think about how I want the year ahead to feel, rather than what I want it to look like on paper. I sit by the fire with a notebook and ask myself softer questions.
How do I want my days to unfold?
What do I want more of?
What do I need less of?
Where do I want to protect my energy?
There’s no pressure to have all the answers. Just space to reflect and notice what comes up.
Goals and dreams, not resolutions
I don’t make resolutions anymore. I make room for goals and dreams instead.
Goals can be flexible. They can shift and grow as life does. Dreams don’t demand perfection, they simply invite hope.
Some years my goals are practical, routines I want to establish, projects I want to nurture. Other years they’re quieter, more rest, deeper connection, more time spent doing the things that make me feel grounded and content.
There is no right or wrong way to begin a year.
Trusting the season you’re in
Winter teaches us that not everything blooms at once. Some things need time underground before they’re ready to grow and that’s not failure it’s nature.
If this season of life feels slow or uncertain, that doesn’t mean you’re behind. It might just mean you’re wintering, gathering strength for what’s to come.
So if you’re feeling the pull to slow down, to light the fire earlier, to read more, to potter, to dream without pressure - listen to it.
Spring will come soon enough.
For now, it’s enough to rest, reflect and allow the year ahead to take shape gently.
With love
Charlie 🤍
